Great-great-granddaughters of Sand Creek Captive Lucinda Eubank, C.J. and Gina, Tell Her Story

Captives were in Black Kettle’s village at Sand Creek, per period documents that C.J. Pierce and Gina Ellis say they have found through research. They are cousins, and their great-great-grandmother was Lucinda Eubank, who was held in the village at Sand Creek.

Gina and C.J., along with Chuck Bowen, Mike Bowen, Butch Kelley, Joe Harbert, Jeff Broome, Tim and Bailey, visited the National Park Service Sand Creek site Friday, June 14. Though no period artifacts were found below the bluff at the NPS site, that bluff still is important to the Sand Creek story. That is where the soldiers first saw the Indian village, about two to three miles up the creek, extending north along the creek, scattered, for about three miles.

The group met just north of Lamar by Highway 287, and on the trip out there, we showed them about the lodgepole trail route and where it intersected at what is now the Lost Sand Creek Site. We explained how the guide, Robert Bent, made attempts to thwart the attack and showed them where he convinced Colonel Chivington to turn off the lodgepole trail. Turning off that trail led the soldiers on top of a ridge where they were about 85 feet higher than the Indians in the village below and were spotted by Little Bear, who said they looked like a long black line on the horizon. Learn more in the video.

After the outing, the group met back in Lamar to look at artifacts Chuck and Sheri found at Sand Creek. Jeff Broome was unable to stay. Some of those artifacts likely belonged to captives.
