By Mike Bowen, co-author, We Found the Lost Sand Creek Site
Thank you to everyone who stopped by our Lost Sand Creek booth at Lamar Days!
We had a sampling of Sand Creek artifacts on display. Chuck and Sheri Bowen have discovered well over 4,000 period artifacts which shows the location of Black Kettle’s village and battle areas. Every artifact was documented with a photo and the GPS coordinates. The waypoints of those coordinates were uploaded to Google Earth and when looking at the artifacts on satellite imagery maps, it provides clarity on where events took place at Sand Creek and how that changes the traditional massacre story. No period artifacts were found below the bluff where the National Park Service has established its historic site. All of the artifacts Chuck found were starting at least two miles up the creek from the NPS site on the Bowen family ranch.
The Bowens’ discovery debunks the massacre story and corroborates the account by soldier Irving Howbert. More about his account can be found in our book, We Found the Lost Sand Creek Site. If you want to see artifacts found by the Bowens at the Lost Sand Creek Site, our book has over 100 photos of artifacts and maps.
Many stopped by our booth to discuss our discovery and buy t-shirts and books.
