Charles Benson Bowen, known as “Buster” by his family and friends, served as a Lieutenant in World War II.
He was a Navigator on a B-25 bomber, with the Air Apaches 345th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Corps. He enlisted in 1942 but was sent home for several months due to an overwhelming amount of people volunteering to serve in the War. It is explained further in the video.
On a mission to Formosa, his plane was hit. He was likely saved from a worse fate due to his parachute, but not for the reason you’d likely think. He was also wearing a flak suit. This account is in our book. Be sure to check it out.
He left the service in 1946, just three years later, he was married to Frances and they purchased a ranch on Sand Creek, adjoining the ranch his parents bought the year prior.
Buster and Frances were the landowners of the Bowen family ranch, what would become the Lost Sand Creek Site. Chuck found his Sand Creek artifacts on land he leased from them.
Chuck took Buster metal detecting and asked him about the artifacts he found.

One of my first concerns was what would I do with the artifacts.
“Daddy, what would you like me to do with the artifacts I find?”
“You can do whatever you want. I’m not interested in them, and don’t know why anyone would want to dig them up in the first place.”
One day I took him metal detecting and we found a bullet.
