Chuck Bowen Joins Rod’s Photography in 1974, Buys the Business in 1975

By Mike Bowen

co-author, We Found the Lost Sand Creek Site

Rod’s Photography, owned by Rod Hawk, was in downtown Lamar at 107 South Main, where Thoughts in Bloom is now located.

The photo studio was in the back of the Hallmark gift card store. They placed an ad in the Lamar Daily News in late January/early February 1974 to promote an introductory get acquainted special to present their new professional photographer, Chuck Bowen. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, customers could get their photo at the special rate of $1.50.

Chuck was an employee there until he purchased the photo studio and lab division of Rod’s Photography in March of 1975. A story was published in the Daily News announcing the sale. The story mentioned that Chuck would keep the name until June of that year, but had he not settled on a new name. The photo studio and lab would continue to operate in the back of the gift card store.

By 1976, Chuck and Sheri were operating Bowen Photography at 405 West Olive St.

Did any of you get your photo taken by Chuck at Rod’s Photography?
