The Bowens have family history in Medicine Lodge.
Chuck Bowen’s great-grandmother, Elizabeth Mills, was from Medicine Lodge. Some of the items in the Stockade Museum belonged to the wife of Govan Mills. He was a brother to Elizabeth and Chuck’s great-uncle.
Chuck and his wife, Sheri, also have a connection to the late Chief Charlie Little Coyote. He personified the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Pageant for many years. He was in the Bowens’ home in the late 90s and went to the Bowens’ Lost Sand Creek Site to have a sagebrush blessing. See more about that visit in chapter 13 of our book. Chuck’s grandparents purchased the Golden Rule Ranch on Sand Creek in 1948. Elbert S. Rule originally owned it. He also owned an oil refinery in Wichita and the Golden Rule gas stations in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. There are some items in the museum, compliments of Elbert S. Rule.
